Thank you for this question, which is likely on the minds of many General Contractors. My first suggestion is to check with the building authority in the town and/or county in which you are working: requirements may differ by city, county and state. Your clients may not be aware of licensure requirements or fees; therefore, you should tally the fees before you bid on the job, or include a clause in your contract that the homeowner will be responsible for any fees imposed specifically for his/her job. That seems fair and reasonable to me. Once you secure the licenses (remember to keep the receipts) keep your licensure papers with you or your foreman on the job site.
